comments: Hi there, I'm Edmund Yeo, a Malaysian filmmaker currently working on a documentary on 30s-50s badminton in our country (pre-Independence Malaysia). One of the most memorable events in our badminton history was Mr Frank Devlin's visit to Singapore in 1937 to play against our local champions. I want to cover a bit of this anecdote, therefore I'm wondering whether there are any photos or materials of Mr. Devlin that I can look at for references regarding this trip? Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers, Edmund
Devlin’s daughter, Sue Peard, was able to provide a good deal of information which was passed on to Edmund Yeo. It is pleasing that Badminton Museum of Ireland was able to be of assistance in the production of the documentary and it also underlines the standing of Frank Devlin in World Badminton. The email below, from Malaysia, confirms the historical value of the information supplied
Dear Dick
Thank you so much! The information from the documentary are definitely invaluable.
It's amazing to see the scannings of old newspapers from Singapore and Malaysia. And to see that he actually visited Kuala Lumpur and my mother's hometown Ipoh as well.
I will definitely acknowledge Sue and the museum in our end credits! And yes, I know of Sue and Judy, and so honoured to get hold of this from Sue's collection. :
The Historical Item in this issue shows an extract from the information supplied and space prevented the display of the complete information.
In 1986 the International Badminton Federation (now WBF) honoured Frank Devlin for “Long and Distinguished Service to International Badminton “. Paul Erik Nielsen, President of International Badminton Federation travelled to Dublin to make the presentation in Terenure Badminton Centre. The Gallery Item displays an image taken on the occasion and it includes family and friends.
Work is continuing in relation to the Museum project and any memorabilia will be gratefully accepted by way of donation or loan. Contact can be made through the website.
