The purpose of the Badminton Museum of Ireland is to preserve the great heritage of Irish Badminton and to make the general badminton public aware of it.
I hope that there will be general interest in the items displayed this month
The Historical Item is a report from 1982 showing details of Connacht Branch Tournaments played in that season. Apart from their own closed events it is interesting to see the number of Open Tournaments and from the finalists listings it is clear that these events were very popular with top Leinster players. Is it that the fixture list is now so congested that these events no longer appear on the calendar. Also it is noted that a Dublin Club won a team event in that year. Also it is good to see that two Connacht players were selected for the Irish Under 15 panel. I also note the name J. Dolan on the Sligo team photograph – is this the father of Jonathan Dolan, one of the current top players. Confirmation please to the Curator.
The Gallery item displays the presentation of the Irish team to a group of dignitaries prior to a match in Terenure Centre. This took place in 1956 and it looks like there was a good attendance. Current visitors to Terenure Centre will probably recognise the seating.
