The purpose of the Badminton Museum of Ireland is to preserve the great heritage of Irish Badminton and to make the general badminton public aware of it.
Welcome to issue 65 of Museum records.
In the Gallery Item is displayed an unusual photograph from 1960. The Irish Uber Cup team seem in a jovial mood checking into their hotel in Copenhagen prior to the European Zone final. The team had beaten Sweden 7-0 in the semi-final. Denmark proved too strong with the doubles pairing of Mary O’Sullivan and Yvonne Kelly picking up Ireland’s point.
For anyone currently involved in the vexed question of grading, the Historical Item will be of particular interest. It displays a letter from Mountmellick Badminton Club to the Secretary of Midland West Badminton League in 1933 contesting a handicapping decision made in relation to another club. This correspondence was included in the Minute Book of Mountmellick Badminton Club 1932-35. These are very interesting records and were generously given to the Museum by Mr.Eric Earle. Amazingly they came to light when English Badminton Museum was seeking information on an English International player.
The trustees of Badminton Museum of Ireland are aware that there is much archive material around the country that should be preserved. We are interested in hearing of any such material.
